Unfortunately not much time for blogging today as to many jobs to get done before the girls wake!
However i did want to join in with Rhonda's http://down—to—earth.blogspot.com/ (not sure how to do the link thingy yet but i tried!) Friday on my mind photo. On my mind today is what is left of my strawberries and carrot tops after the wallaby has been visiting again.
They really do shred everything and not much seems to deter them. No matter where we fence they get in! We have had some success with seaweed solution as a deterrent and also the dogs clipped hair spread around but with all the rain we keep getting these don't tend to last long. It is really heartbreaking to go out to visit the patch in the morning and see areas missing and wallaby poo in your garden on the food we eat. If anyone has any tricks please share them…i would be very grateful!
Do you have trouble with wildlife in your gardens or do you embrace them?
I have been having fun today watching Ruby and Tara play with their new train chest that we found at the carboot market on the weekend. It was such a bargain and it looks as though someone put so much work and thought into it and it has obviously been well loved! We also picked up 3 pairs of shoes for $2 and they look as though they have hardly been used.I really get so much satisfaction out of making these finds and also knowing that other children have loved a toy before mine come to it!
For some reason Tara always frowns as soon as i take a photo! And apparently the train is hers not Ruby's!
Not the best photos i know but so hard to catch them while playing! I had given up on the markets for awhile as there didn't seem to be much second hand stuff anymore…mainly new goods and i was getting a little disheartened at the prices people were charging for things but it does seem to have a new lease of life at the moment with a good mix of second hand wares, clothes, plants and vegies…what i think a market should be although i know many would disagree! Do you have a good market in your area?
I love opshopping but just find it too hard to get into most with a double pram at moment and the girls don't like sitting in their pram at the best of times..not to mention having to field all the ‘wow you have double trouble there or you have a handful are they twins' comments!(Seriously, i know people mean well but they drive me nuts sometimes!)
I do absolutely love the toy library though, wonderful way to try out new toys and also some of those bigger toys that are just too expensive. You just take them back after a few weeks when they grow bored of them. I encourage all parents to check with their councils to see if there is a toy library close by, they are usually run by parent volunteers and have a very minimal annual charge.
My 15 yr old daughter is off to the local show tonight with her friends…on her own. I know she is more than old enough but gosh sometimes it is hard to loosen those apron ties isn't it? I will of course worry until she is safely back at home…..hmmm helicopter parent anyone? She is a good kid though with a lovely group of friends so am sure there is nothing to worry about. Hopefully no rain tonight for them!

Apart from fencing them out but that could be hard and expensive. We have Bandicoots eating our pepinos Too hard to fence and there are plenty so I don’t worry too much but wallabies are much bigger. Sorry, no help at all!

I have been dragged, kicking and screaming originally but now more or less gracefully, into intensively fencing my gardens. Bird wire buried to stop bandicoots, chicken wire to stop wallabies, netting over the top to stop bush turkeys, possums, cockatoos, bower birds, etc. It has advantages, and I’m designing around those advantages now (ready made trellises, chook caging…) but my only advice is to the old permaculture line of “the problem is the solution”. I wrote about my solution here. It is hearbreaking when they do so much devestation though.
We had to put a very good square netted fence around our house yard to protect our vegies, but it was worth it. Too much heartbreak growing vegetables for the wildlife to eat! I know what you mean about the op shops. My two youngest are 14 months apart, and my boy has Down syndrome so he’s small. I was forever asked were they twins, and the ‘double trouble’ one! Also I couldn’t bear the hassle of going into shops with them. To try on clothes was impossible, so I just looked like a scruff for 3 years. Now I’m back in the op shop and making up for lost time! LOL You’ll get your life back sooner than you think. 😉 As for getting into posts, just left click and drag the mouse over the address left in the comments. I’ve read a lot about deterrents and some people swear by pouring human urine around the property perimeter but not everyone will go for that I know – but I thought I’d put it out there in case some would.

Barb…i think fencing may be our only option but thank goodness we don’t have any bandicoots or possums at this stage…i don’t think!
Linda W – Thanks for that link…i realised i had actually read it before and your carpet snakes when i was trawling through yor posts one day and lost all time!i fear we may have to head that way too…we have started setting up some basic wire fencing to run along the tops of the vegie patch but it is really ruining the appeal of how i was setting up the gardens and all of DP’s hard work building his rock walls will seem a little lost once we do the front. We had some bush turkey’s wander up from the scrub into house yard the other day so i really hope they aren’t about to enter the fray!
Linda – Thanks Linda…sounds as though you have your hands full too and i am looking forward to that day of ‘browsing’ in op shops rather than it being a military operation again! thanks for the post tips…think i am doing everything the hard way at moment till i learn the tips!
Becky – Thanks for the tip…i had actually read that one (and did consider it) but we didn’t quite get there yet!Dog droppings(dry) do seem to work a little placed around the fruit trees and human hair.
